Officer Involved Shootings

Presented by: Chaplain/Dr. Tim Schroeder BA; MDiv; DMin. Tim has been engaged with the RCMP as either an Auxiliary Constable and/or Chaplain for more than 25 years. His initial involvement was with the Kelowna, BC Detachment; Since 2020 he has been Southeast District Chaplain in “E” Division serving 44 Detachments and more than 1000 police personnel. The impetus for this course came from an unfortunate set of circumstances in which he found himself engaged in 7 member involved shootings in a short period of time. Course Description: A member involved shooting has significant impact on entire Police Departments. This course has one major objective: to provide a meaningful answer to the question: “How do Chaplains best engage after a Member Involved Shooting?” There is a process that will unfold in all member involved shootings and the better a Chaplain knows and understands the process the more natural it will be for her or him to be helpful. This process will involve both the legal/investigative side of the incident and the official trauma support side. This course is not offered from the perspective of psychological expertise but rather from learnings accrued by “being there.” By the end of this unit, participants will: 1. Understand the legal/investigative trac that will always be in play and know their role in it. 2. Be aware of the formal/official trauma support trac that will usually be in play and know their role in it. 3. Know what to expect at a shooting scene. 4. Know what to expect at the Detachment immediately following a shooting. 5. Understand how members who have been involved in a shooting are processed/treated. 6. Clearly grasp the importance of long term engagement. 7. Be aware of who to engage when offering support. 8. Be aware of a Chaplain’s unique role in providing support.
