About the Event
This three hour webinar will explore the construct of moral injury, its relation to other posttraumatic stress injuries, its potential impact on police officers, and how chaplains can help to address and heal this injury. Within one research study, 37% of municipal and provincial police officers and 50% of RCMP members screened positive for one or more mental disorders (Carleton et al., 2018). In response to these high levels, questions are being answered about what else might be adversely affecting police officers, such as a newly identified type of trauma syndrome called moral injury.
Our presenter Dr. Lorraine Smith-MacDonald is a Postdoctoral Fellow within the Heroes in Mind, Advocacy, and Research Consortium (HiMARC) in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, at the University of Alberta. HiMARC is the provincial initiative researching the health and wellbeing of military, veterans, public safety personnel, and their families.
